The late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and helped shape the fight for women's rights and gender equality. Among her many accomplishments include laws passed prohibiting employers from discriminating against employees based on gender or reproductive choices, where state-funded schools must admit women, where women have the right to financial independence and benefits, and where juries must include women, to highlight a few.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg also loved the opera. She was a supporter of numerous opera companies and was a speaker at the Glimmerglass Festival. She even organized "Opera And The Law" talks and occasionally appeared onstage in small roles in operas, including Washington National Opera's performance of Die Fledermaus. For Bader Ginsburg, the arts bridge the widest of divides amongst people. We want to pay our respects to Ruth Bader Ginsburg and to women in general by presenting a project that we've thought about for over a year now. We have dreamed of doing an all-female program and are planning on a recording project doing just that, with a plan of completing it August 2021, just in time for the year anniversary of Bader Ginsburg's death. We plan on recording works by past and present female composers, including a commissioned work by a current composer (details to come as we solidify details). This program and recording of female composer's works will be dedicated to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We will post updates as we plan our program and set performance and recording dates, but this is a project that we are extremely excited to roll out. Stay tuned!
